Yasmin for Acne: 3 Reluctant Secrets Nobody’s Telling You

In Acne by Cheryl Woodman MChemLeave a Comment

Anyway, I’ve been looking into birth control specifically for acne, and Yasmin seems to be the most recommended. Has anyone used this?

I see this question asked on Reddit and it’s stirring big emotions in me.

12 years ago I was in the depths of acne – willing to try anything to get clear – the only reason I didn’t take Yasmin for acne is because I get occasional migraines with aura. Aura are weird vision distortions – mine look like a big blurry patch with moving patterns and sparkles. It’s not as fun as it sounds 😂

Because migraines with aura get you an exaggerated risk of stroke as a side effect – I couldn’t seriously consider Yasmin for acne.

It’s the best silver lining of my occasional migraines. Thank you migraines.

Yasmin and acne: here are the science facts I wish I knew 12 years ago. I hope you’ll share these ‘reluctant secrets’ with every acne warrior you know 🥰

Yasmin For Acne: How Does It Work?

Before we get to those 3 reluctant secrets about Yasmin and acne that nobody’s telling you about, here’s a whistle-stop tour of how Yasmin works against acne.

The most common cause of acne is an increase in your androgen levels. But your androgen increase does not have to be out of range on a blood test – your androgen increase can simply just be elevated for you as an individual.

Psst – most of the acne warriors I work with have ‘normal’ androgen levels.

So you’re totally normal if your blood results are coming back ‘healthy’ but you’re like – there’s obviously something wrong – look at my skin!

Androgens cause an overproduction of skin oil (sebum) and acne bacteria thrive in sebum. Boom you get acne.

Birth control pills like Yasmin reduce the amount of androgens in your body.

Yasmin contains a specific form of progestin known as drospirenone – while some birth control uses progestins having androgenic effects – these make acne way worse – other forms of oral birth control like Yasmin use drospirenone – this has an anti-androgenic benefit.

Sounds pretty idyllic, doesn’t it? I hope every woman with acne can know these top 3 facts before making the decision to take Yasmin for acne.

1. Taking Yasmin for Acne Can Worsen Acne in future

I imagine you’re not planning to take Yasmin for a lifetime, especially if you’re wanting children. A major downside of taking Yasmin for Acne is that a few months after you discontinue, acne usually comes back worse than before.

Here’s one big reason why (even your doctor likely isn’t aware of this).

It is now known that birth control causes nutritional deficiencies meaning birth control like Yasmin can deplete your body of vital vitamins and minerals that help your skin resist acne.

Peek at this science quote;

[psst OCs stand for oral contraceptives like Yasmin]
Much research has been conducted to investigate the physiological changes that occur in women who take OCs. These include changes in general health as well as in nutritional needs… It has been shown that the key nutrient depletions concern folic acid, vitamins B2, B6, B12, vitamin C and E and the minerals magnesium, selenium and zinc.Eur Rev Med Pharmacol Sci. 2013 Jul;17(13):1804-13

Low levels of many of these vitamins and minerals are linked to increasing your risk of acne, for example many science studies show us this same conclusion:

Subjects with acne had significantly lower serum zinc levels compared to controls.Dermatol Ther. 2020 Nov;33(6):e14252

Yasmin is likely to lower your blood levels of zinc and other amazing, yummy nutrients your skin needs to be clear. After a few months of discontinuing birth control, acne will likely come back worse than before.

That’s not what I want for you. Psst, diet is a major trigger for acne. Download your free copy of my one-page acne diet cheatsheet here.

2. Yasmin Is Covering Up Your Acne Triggers

Yasmin isn’t added hormones; it’s replacement hormones.

Most forms of acne are caused by hormone imbalances (that look ‘normal’ on a blood test).

Every natural cycle you have, has your amazing body making wonderful estrogen and progesterone. These are amazing hormones for helping keep skin clear because both estrogen and progesterone are anti-androgenic.

But when you take Yasmin you’re shutting off your body’s natural production of estrogen and progesterone.

You could be finding hormonal harmony but instead, you’re putting ‘autopilot’ into your hormonal cockpit. Your body switches off.

After a few months of Yasmin, maybe 6 – your acne heals and you finally get clear.

You’ve changed nothing other than taking ‘The Pill’.

This means you’re still pressing all of your acne triggers – it’s just you don’t know about it.

Right now, it might seem like an acceptable trade-off. You don’t have acne anymore so why would you be worried about pressing acne triggers?

The fact is, the hormonal imbalances which lead to acne are also associated with diseases like cancer, PCOS, heart disease and more recently Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Peek at this science quote:

A recent study… reported a 17% higher risk of breast cancer in association with severe teenage acne.Breast Cancer Res Treat. 2019 Sep; 177(2): 487–495.

But don’t worry, having acne now doesn’t mean you’re going to get cancer tomorrow. Consider it your body’s very clever warning mechanism, switching on decades earlier. Acne is saying – hey you, yes YOU, pay attention to me (!) you’ve got some hormonal imbalances here and you NEED to address them, give me attention NOW so you can be the healthiest you for a lifetime.

3. Yasmin Can Make It a Struggle to Heal from Acne Naturally

Not only do birth control pills like Yasmin interrupt your body’s natural production of anti-acne hormones like estrogen and progesterone. Birth control pills like Yasmin also elevate other hormones associated with acne.

One goes by the name of insulin.

The situation is…

Birth control pills like Yasmin decrease your body’s ability to handle sugar.

So a treat dessert when taking Yasmin has a bigger sugar hit on your body.

This also happens for some time after discontinuing Yasmin.

When your body gets a big sugar hit, it needs more insulin to take that ‘dangerous’ sugar out of your bloodstream and deliver it to cells in your body.

Insulin is the amazing hormone that shuttles sugar out of your bloodstream.

Peek at this science quote:

Godsland et al. studied 1,060 women taking oral contraceptives. These women were subjected to an oral glucose overload and, when comparing their metabolic variables with a 418 woman control group, it was observed that depending on the dose and type of progestin, combination drugs were associated with glycemias 43–61% higher than in controls, insulin responses 12–40% higher.Linacre Q. August, 2014; 81(3): 209–218

Psst, glycemias means blood sugar level.

So taking oral contraceptives can increase your blood sugar spikes by 43-61%. That’s huge and in turn, means a massive release of acne-causing insulin hormones.

Yasmin and Acne: The Bottom Line

It can be a major temptation to take Yasmin for acne  – who doesn’t love taking a pill and getting clear skin? It’s easy and short term you’ll be loving life – but the drawback is, your underlying hormonal imbalances are going untreated.

These hormonal imbalances are going to be impacting your mood, your memory and your long-term health.

Plus when you come off Yasmin, acne can come back even worse than before.

Wouldn’t you rather heal those underlying hormonal imbalances once and for all?
