The key to choosing awesome skincare? Knowing your skin type! Your skin type is a BALANCE of these 3 things, watery-ness, oiliness and sensitivity. Really, that is all there is to it. The balance of those 3 things makes us able to put a handy tag onto our skin type. A tag that is your BEST friend when choosing skincare. Let’s get down to business, today I have for you a trusty ‘menu’ of THE 5 skin types, PLUS what you should be MOST aware of for each…
SKIN TYPE NO.1 – COMBINATION
A combination skin type is THE MOST common skin type out there! A combination skin type has a lotta benefits and a few things we need to be super aware of. How do you KNOW if you have a combination skin type? Your skin will fit THIS description…
MUST KNOWS FOR COMBINATION SKIN TYPES
1 | Your cheek and eye areas are MOST definitely a completely different skin type from your T-zone. You probably already know this as you’re reaching a hand for the blotting powder! Have you thought about it this way around? You might need blotting products for your T-zone, but do your cheek and eye areas actually need a moisture BOOST? This is THE tip for combination skin types – treat your cheek and eye areas as unique. Get your multi-product-tasking ON.
2 | Exfoliating is SUPER important on the mission to keep oily skin looking ‘fresh’ and spot-free. Oily skin types are awesome at making moisturising skin oils all on their lonesome. This is the reason why your combination skin is prone to spots and blackheads. It is no.2 of the 3 things that cause spots and why exfoliating is the KEY to spot-free skin.
WHY YOU SHOULD LOVE COMBINATION SKIN
Us combination skin types might spend our time FIGHTING against the T-ZONE shine, but that shine is what makes a combination skin type awesome! Oh yes lovelies, this is a skin type to LOVE. Oily skin ages SO well. Oiliness keeps skin all elastic and flexible, that means skin is MOST resilient to wrinkles and aging. Next time you are battling ‘The Shine’ just remind yourselves of that #OilySkinIsAwesome.

SKIN TYPE NO.2 – OILY
Are you an oily skin type? A lot of us feel like we are battling ‘The Shine’ like we were becoming vampires glistening in the sunshine (oh Edward Cullen!), but sometimes what you think is an oily skin type is actually a combination one. Take a gander of the ‘oily skin type menu’ and make your diagnosis!
MUST KNOWS FOR OILY SKIN TYPES
1 | Work ‘WITH’ your oily skin. That shine battle can drive you to pick up the ‘drying’ skincare products – that’s the ones packed with ingredients like alcohol and witch hazel. Drying or ‘astringent’ skincare is your rebound skincare relationship. The one that stops you working on yourself, temporarily fixes the heartache, only to leave you worse off in the long-term. These kind of product are SUPER popular, because they are so strong, they have immediate effect… the catch, long term damage, that could end up with a dry+oily skin type that has also become sensitive. The solution, check out these 3 awesome ingredients for controlling oily skin.
2 | Watch out for ‘dehydration’. Oily skin types are super good at keeping water IN your skin, but sometimes they don’t have enough of it – this is dehydrated skin. Hydrating skincare is your KEY, ingredients like Glycerine and Hyaluronic acid will actually ATTRACT more water to your skin AND keep it there.
WHY YOU SHOULD LOVE OILY SKIN
Remember that bit about a combination skin type aging ‘oh SO well’ because of a naturally oily T-zone? Well, here is THE thing, an oily skin type is THE best out of all the skin types at aging well. Not even a normal skin type trumps an oily skin type on this one. Love your oily skin because that oil is your natural anti-aging powers just being a bit ‘braggy’ *wink wink*.

SKIN TYPE NO.3 – SENSITIVE
Do you have sensitive skin? Get your eyes on this ‘sensitive skincare menu’ to be sure of your diagnosis…
MUST KNOWS FOR SENSITVE SKIN
1 | Your skin already knows this, but you might not consciously. A ton of skincare has known allergens and sensitisers in those ‘oh so pretty bottles’. HOLY MOLY. The BIGGEST reason? Fragrance, ‘parfum’ and essential oils. Sensitive skin has a highly effective alarm bell for ANY intruders that are not skin loving and 100% skin friendly. Stay clear of strong smelling skincare if you have a sensitive skin type.
2| Your tap water could be your NEMESIS! If you have ‘hard’ water, you can get a ‘soapy scum’ residue of your showering skincare products that are INVISIBLE to you, but your skin, it knows! Showergel has stuff in it that are known irritants. If these get left on sensitive skin, a ‘Flair-up’ is on its way. Get a read of, ‘Why hard water can be bad for skin’ for some awesome showergel alternatives.
WHY YOU SHOULD LOVE YOUR SENSITIVE SKIN
Sensitive skin ‘knows’ what it’s talking about. Your skin is an expert! It has a highly evolved and super effective alarm system. It tells you EXACTLY what is no-good for it, and it tells you in a way that you can’t ignore. That means you change your skincare to something that is going to LOVE your skin in the way it’s asking. A lot of skin types, well they have ‘communication problems’, they might be confused, not express themselves in the right way and might even be the ‘silent type’. Your skin – it talks, and it knows how to!

SKIN TYPE NO.4 – DRY / AGING
Are you a dry skin sufferer? If you are, these will be your symptoms…
MUST KNOWS FOR DRY SKIN
1 | Is your skin dry or dehydrated? Is your skin dry because that is naturally ‘its thing’ or has your skin become temporarily ‘dehydrated? The first, that is a skin type, the second, that is a symptom, an effect, not your actual skin type. Skin types that are sensitive (commonly called atopic) can suffer from dehydration because of reactions to contaminants in the air, or things like allergens in your skincare. Even oily skin types can sometimes suffer from dehydration. Dehydrated skin – that is all about increasing moisture which is BEST done with ‘normal’ skin type targeted skincare. Only reach for ‘dry’ skin type targeted skincare if you actually have a ‘dry’ skin type.
2 | Moisturiser PLUS facial oils are your best friend. In-fact body AND facial oils are PERFECT for your skin. Dry skin is unprotected, dry skin has lost its naturally protective oily layer – ‘The Skin Raincoat’ – very fashionable right now *wink wink*. Oil based skincare helps to ‘replenish’ that raincoat which is the MAIN goal of all dry skincare.
3| Anti-aging skincare. Dry skin types are prone to aging faster. That’s all because a dry skin types ‘protective raincoat’ is missing #WhoStoleIt? Very young dry skin types should make sure to treat by moisturising, and by your late 20’s early 30’s, an anti-aging treatment will be a PERFECT addition to helping your skin age well. Dry skin types should start to use anti-aging skincare sooner.
WHY YOU SHOULD LOVE YOUR DRY SKIN
Just look at those pores! Where the hell are they? Exactly the reason to love your DRY skin type, those are the kinda pores an oily skin type would kill for #WatchOut. Those cameras can get AS close as they want to, because not even a magnifying glass could get counting your pores! That also saves you from blackheads and ‘pustule’ spot types #awesome.

SKIN TYPE NO.5 – NORMAL
And if you have gotten all the way through those 4 skin types and still not found your diagnosis. Let me congratulate you, you have THE most envied skin type – NORMAL! What does that mean? Let me tell you…
MUST KNOWS FOR NORMAL SKIN TYPES
1| You don’t need to fuss! No really, no need to bring chocolates, flowers, even a card, normal skin knows what it is doing and if you fuss, normal skin can change into a different skin type. That means avoiding product over use and sticking to Mr.Reliable skincare that isn’t packed full of actives your skin just doesn’t need.
2 | Protect YOUR ‘normal’. Your skin type is THE most sought after, I know you want to keep it that way *wink*. Your KEY? Protection, sunscreen PLUS looking after yourself from the inside-out #SpaDayExcuse. Sunscreen protects skin from damage, that means your skin gets to carry on doing what it knows to do best.
WHY YOU SHOULD LOVE YOUR NORMAL SKIN TYPE
Err…. INSTANT jealousy, this one is a no-brainer ‘eh! While not being normal is very interesting an’ all, sometimes it’s nice not to actively think SO much about skincare. You lucky normal skin types can get away with A LOT. Skin won’t notice! Any skin concerns like hyperpigmentation, redness, dry patches take A LOT of ‘trying’ to appear on your skin. #AlwaysPicturePerfect.
