…That is the question. I love beauty tips you get handed down through generations of your family, I remember one of my mums vividly.. “Do not use scrub on your face, it’s too delicate!”.. well sorry mum, I may have strayed..
Should you be getting all happy with the Loofah or should you not? Is EXFOLIATION good for skin or is it too harsh and damaging?
There are 2 different ways to exfoliate your skin, one is physically and the other is chemically. So what does that all mean?

Think of physical exfoliation as your traditional scrub, it is your typical loofa, your face wash with scrubbing beads, or that body brush (of which I have brought several but am always too lazy to use routinely!). These have a pretty obvious way of working, by literally brushing away dead skin.

The other less obvious way is what is called a chemical peel! Ooo I hate that word, it brings to mind scary TV clips of people with red faces! The more mainstream version of this exfoliation is to use a face wash with a weak acid in, I use one which has 2% Salicylic acid (another one to look out for is Glycolic acid). These chemicals will remove the uppermost dead skin cells, allowing your skin to glow and to regenerate healthily.

A lot of products containing these ingredients are also aimed at spot prone skin, so they may not be packaged up as lovely beauty products but they definitely do the job.

There are a lot of studies which show chemical exfoliates to have an anti-aging effect as they encourage the ‘turnover’ of skin cells and therefore the growth of new healthy ones. Thanks to my spot prone skin, I have been using salicylic acid products for years now, surely I’ll be turning back that clock in no time!

With all those benefits, for me it’s definitely the chemical exfoliates which save the day. What is your go to?
