What Is Face Yoga?

First up – the basics. What is face yoga? How is it possible to achieve a down-ward dog position with just one body part? All great questions my fellow yogi.

Facial yoga is a breed all of its own. In replacement of your down-ward dog comes ‘The V’ for droopy eye-lids and crow’s feet. In place of your go-to Savasana, aka corpse pose, aka – all I need to do is lie here while my body garners feel-good yogic energy comes ‘The Smile Smoother’.

Then there’s The Flirty Eyes, The Giraffe and The Smoothe the Brow. Apparently great for sagging skin and wrinkles.

The best part, there’s no yoga matt required – in fact all you need is your face and a pair of willing hands – your own will do. Although word of warning – these face yoga moves may not be putting your fellow commuters at ease…

How Is Face Yoga Supposed to Work?

Now if you’re investing in looking as individual as facial yoga will no doubt make you look (which is still very beautiful by the way!)- you want to know that it’s working right? That it can really hold its hand up and testify to the truth that is – I can help you get rid of wrinkles. That placing your hands as 2 V for victory signs framing your eyelids really will help you get rid of eye bags.

So just how is facial yoga supposed to work?

Facial yoga has a 3-fold manifesto. It claims to;

  1. Re-stimulate blood flow to your skin cells – increasing oxygen and nutrient delivery.
  2. Stimulate collagen and elastin synthesis creating plumped, wrinkle resistant skin.
  3. Tone and shorten facial muscles, tightening skin.

Essentially face yoga is telling you it can aid your skin against ageing. Fighting the crow’s feet, defending from the jowls and plumping out fine lines and wrinkles. It also claims to be super-speedy, with face yoga experts telling of visible benefits in just 2 weeks. Is this too good to be true?

Can Facial Exercises be Anti-Ageing?

Let’s take an example face yoga exercise to put this to the test. Let’s take ‘The V’…

Yup that’s the one. To achieve this position there’s a couple of steps to take;

  • Step 1: Place your fingers in the above position and apply a light pressure to the outer corners of your eyes.
  • Step 2: Squint at the ceiling. You should feel your lower eye lids tightening as they try to close upwards.
  • Step 3: Repeat 6 times and finish by squeezing your eyes firmly shut for 10 seconds.

…and after 1, 2 and 3 you’ll end up in the above position.

With the logistics sorted – what does the science say? Can The V actually fight your crow’s feet and defend your skin against fine lines and wrinkles?

Let’s start with the positives. With all that tapping and stretching and pressuring, face yoga will help stimulate blood flow to your skin and that’s a pretty good thing. Move your face in any way and you’re likely to increase its share of oxygenation and nutrients, Aka food for your skin. Feed your skin well and it’ll stay youthful and healthy for longer.

Ever noticed how your skin looks better in the morning? Not just more even in complexion but also free-er from fine lines and wrinkles? This is not just a side effect of morning eye-haze.

Your skin carries lots of fluids that help to keep it plumped and healthy. When skin is full of these fluids, wrinkles are less likely to form and those that already exist are less likely to be visible. The reason your skin looks healthiest in the morning is because these so called dermal fluids are evenly distributed among your skin cells. This distribution changes during the day as gravity takes effect, but there are ways you can counteract this and one of them is through exercise.

On this count – face yoga may help. Although full body exercise is almost definitely going to get you a better and longer lasting effect.

On our remaining 2 claims of face yoga there is no evidence. No evidence that it could boost your skins collagen synthesis or tone and shorten your facial muscles.

Pro-Tip: Endurance exercise has been shown to reduce the biological age of your skin. Pretty interesting ‘eh. Just 2 cardio sessions of 30 minutes a week can make your skin behave up to 25 years younger.

The Problem with Face Yoga: Dynamic Wrinkling

Did you look at that last picture of The V face yoga move and think to yourself – yeeek, I thought I was supposed to be avoiding wrinkles not making them? Your instincts are very right my friend. There are many facial yoga moves that require you to purposefully wrinkle your skin… and if the wind changes, well our mothers taught us exactly what that means ‘eh.

Wrinkles are really common in areas of skin that move a lot. That’s areas like your eyes, your mouth and your forehead. Skin here behaves exactly like your favourite pair of jeans. The more they’re stretched in a certain way, the less resilient they become. The less resilient they become, the more they’re open to sagging and in the case of your skin that means wrinkles.

This is what’s called dynamic wrinkling – the more you move skin in a certain way, the more stretched it becomes and therefore the more wrinkly.

The Bottom Line – Does Face Yoga Work?

There is no evidence that face yoga will help defend your skin from fine lines and wrinkles. The benefits it’s able to lend your skin in boosting your skins circulation are much more quickly obtained through a quick dose of cardio exercise.

My advice – skip the time investment of face yoga or face pilates and in its place add yourself in a twice weekly morning run.
