Do you have irritated skin? Is it just ‘your skin’ doing its thing, or is it because you showed the sun too much love? Maybe it’s that new facial exfoliate with your favourite skincare acid that took things 1-step too far for your lovely ‘visage’. Oops! Whatever it is that has gotten your skin all angry ‘attcha, THIS skincare ingredient pulls a WHOLE world of skin love outta the bag for irritated skin… it’s one not many people know about…
HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOUR SKIN IS IRRITATED?
Irritated skin, you hear that and your probably first think of ITCHINESS. Like when you last went on holiday and got bitten by a resident mosquito that seemed to think you were his favourite kinda candy bar. That itch that you so badly want to scratch is absolutely irritated skin, it means there is something on your skin that your body wants you to get rid of. It shouldn’t be there and it doesn’t like it, so your body tells you to itch it away. Not verbally ‘eh, but it’s definitely ‘message received’.
Then there are other kinds of irritated skin, skin which is reddened or flushed is irritated [like you’d get with a sun burn]. That redness means there is a ‘rush’ of blood to THAT area, all because the body thinks that bit of skin needs rescuing. Something has gone wrong and that redness is your natural ‘ambulance response’.
Then there’s less commonly known signs of skin irritation like skin dryness, dry-flaky skin patches and that tight uncomfortable skin feeling, these are all more ways your body says ‘OOPS! What happened here, help me!’.
A SKIN SAVING INGREDIENT FOR IRRITATED SKIN
It’s the big reveal. Cue your mental drum roll! This skincare ingredient is a huge saviour for irritated skin and is even clinically, drug standard proven (more on that bit later on). What’s it called?… Allantoin!
Allantoin is found naturally in the roots of the Comfrey herb, but the stuff you use in your skincare, you’ll want that to be made in the lab. That’s because Comfrey also contains a toxin that is toxic to your body – it kills stuff, it’s nasty and you wouldn’t want to risk any of it getting into your body. The human made version of Allantoin is totally safe and non-toxic, which means we can get it’s awesome benefits without any risk to our health.
So what does this magic ingredient do? Allantoin has a whole BOX of tricks, a lot of skincare ingredients have 1 main purpose, 1 task in life, 1 dream for your skin. Allantoin has many, if Allantoin had a gender, I think it’d be a women *wink wink*.
Allantoin is an anti-irritant that also helps to speed up wound and skin healing, is an anti-inflammatory, a keratolytic agent (helps your skin to ‘turn over’ revealing new healthy skin) that has a moisturising effect, as well as protecting your skin AND soothing it. What else? Well it only does all that as well as being non-allergenic, non-irritating and non-toxic. That says something for a little ingredient that does so much for skin without causing any upset. Skin and Allantoin just ‘get on’.
A SKINCARE INGREDIENT FOR IRRITATED SKIN THAT ‘REALLY WORKS’
There are a lotta hype skincare ingredients out there. Every year there are new ones, and there will be some ‘supporting evidence’ that they work. It could be a study of 10 people, without a placebo control [the benchmark bit] or it could be a good size group of 100. It might be based on ‘verbatim’, the technical word that just means ‘what did you think of the product?’, did you think it got rid of your wrinkles, did you think it calmed down your irritated skin?
Here is the thing with new ‘miracle’ skincare ingredients, we generally don’t know THAT much about them. The ‘proof’ that they work is probably-definitely limited.
This is not the case with Allantoin. Oh no, this little irritated skin hero is well studied and known to work, so-much-so that the FDA [‘federal drug association’ – a US based government association that ensures the stuff we use is safe AND effective] have even approved certain ‘claims’ for Allantoin containing skincare because of all the proof that Allantoin works for irritated skin.
They aren’t glamorous, but I’ll paraphrase them for you later ‘eh *wink wink*
- For temporary protection of minor cuts, scrapes, burns and sunburn.
- Helps prevent and temporarily protect chafed, cracked, wind burned skin and lips.
- Relieves dryness and softens cold sores and fever blisters.
- Helps treat and prevent diaper rash. Protects chafed skin/minor skin irritations due to/associated with diaper rash and helps protect from/seal out wetness.
These guys are ‘drug’ claims so you won’t see them on skincare that you don’t need to speak to the pharmacist or a doctor for. If the ingredient Allantoin is in there, it’ll do the same thing, it just won’t claim these things as then it’d have to live its life out in the pharmacists counter.
Oh and you probably don’t have diaper rash ‘eh… thought not. Just think of Diaper rash as code for irritated skin…
What does this all mean? Allantoin is a super spectacular ingredient for irritated skin that has a lot of PROOF that it works. #SkincareHero
WHERE TO FIND ALLANTOIN CONTAINING SKINCARE
..and what to look for! As Allantoin is an active ingredient some skincare will actually tell you how much is in the bottle – that’s the kinda transparency we like! This little irritated skin miracle worker is proven when used at 0.5-2%, so you really don’t need a lot of it.
- Skin Fix have a lot of products with the marvel Allantoin in ’em including ‘Body Repair Balm’ (1% Allantoin), ‘Gentle Lotion’ and ’12 hour miracle ointment’ (0.5% Allantoin).
- First Aid Beauty have a ‘Repair’ range that ‘stars’ Allantoin, check out their ‘Ultra Repair Cream’, and their ‘Ultra Repair Lip Therapy’.
- Aveeno is also a good bet for a dose of Allantoin, check out the ‘Aveeno Cream’ for a good ol’ dose of irritated skin love.
If you have irritated skin that thinks it should be getting more attention than your shining personality *wink wink*, absolutely try out some Allantoin in your life. If you see results, come back and let me know! I love hearing your skin rescue stories!
