1. HOTTER THAN HOT SHOWERS
They feel like heaven in a 4ft cubicle, like your own private waterfall where ME-TIME is the number 1 priority #ShowerBliss. To make that shower time, healthy for your skin, it’s worth turning the temperature down a notch or 2. Sometimes you won’t even realise how HOT it really is, #HeatNumbness, like acclimatising to the tropics on holiday, or having ‘asbestos’ hands!
A hot shower, is like 15 minutes of HEATWAVE. If you were in a heatwave, you’d be chugging down on the mineral water to save yourself from dehydration. That’s the same thing that happens to your skin in the shower, heat = dryness.
Heat is also awesome at getting rid of things, think ‘steam cleaners’ – there is something crazily addictive about watching someone clean with one of them! When it comes to your skin, that means the hotter and the longer you’re in there, the more your skin gives up to the shower plug-hole. Skin loses some of the make-up that makes it healthy and allows it to cling-on to moisture. #DoubleWhammy.
If all that wasn’t enough to get you turning down the heat, hot showers can also give you dandruff! Your head is the first place that hot water hits, that means it gets the EXTRA hot water. Hot water means dryness, and that is one of the causes of Dandruff!
2. FACIAL OILS BEFORE CREAM
Facial oils can give your skin an IMMENSELY concentrated dose of skin food #YESplease. A lot of these guys take some time to absorb into your skin, so imagine you put something on top of ‘em. That’s just gone to the back of the que and it might give up (end up being rubbed off on your bedsheets) before it gets its shot at your skin.
PRO-TIP: Save the facial oil for last. Make it the last thing you do in your skincare routine.
3. SCRUBBING TOO HARD WITH A CLARISONIC, PAD OR WIPE
Facial scrubbing is the new beauty MUST thanks to Clarisonic. Beauty revolutions are so exciting it’s easy to become a bit obsessed or try to speed-up the effects by adding a bit more, or brushing a bit harder. This is a moment to remember the wise words of every dentist, “don’t scrub too hard, gentle circular brushing is what you need”, thanks MR.Dentist, wise words for face scrubbing ‘n brushing too!
Scrubbing ‘n pulling at skin has the same reaction as putting a cream on your face it doesn’t like – it irritates skin. That means your disrupting its natural balance by pulling away its normal goodness (the yummy sebum layer) and leaving it open to dryness and infections.
The moral of this story is to think of your dentist where-ever your brushing!
4. NOT CHANGING THE BED SHEETS OFTEN ENOUGH
Those sheets collect a lotta tiny bits n pieces we do NOT want to know about. It’s all stuff you can’t see with the ‘naked eye’, so it’s easy to wear rose-tinted glasses when we think back to the last time we switched the sheets. Sleeping is like taking a bath, but in bedding! Everything on us is going to get on those sheets, and everything on the sheets is going to share back with us. Kind, but no thankyou!
We shed skin like people would queue up for FREE money! Dead skin is bacteria’s playground, so when it’s left on your sheets, it’s like leaving cheese out to catch a mouse. Bacteria’s will find their home on your sheets and then on your FACE.
PRO-TIP: If changing the whole bed more often is TOO much effort, switch your pillowcase instead!
5. RELYING ON FOUNDATION FOR SPF
Hold your hand up if you are a sun LOVER! We are like bee’s to a honeypot when the sun shines its rays of goldenness! Sun is AMAZEBALLS, it’s great for vitamin D, great for health and great at making us feel all happy inside.
It’s super important when ‘sun loving’ to use protection, it rescues us from dry ‘n wrinkly skin. Any self-respecting foundation will have some SPF in it, put SPF only blocks out the UVB rays and they are only half the story, you need sunscreen to block out the UVA ones too. If you want to be sunscreen savvy take a read of this post, “sunscreen confusion – How to protect yourself”.
6. YOUR BED SEE’S YOU LESS THAN THE OFFICE DOES
Skin needs you to love yourself, for it to glow. That means getting some good quality shut-eye. What that should look like to most of us is switching OFF work mode and turning on TURBO relax mode at least 1 hour before bed and getting a solid 6/7/8 hours of sleeping.
Getting your ‘beauty sleep’ on, means your body has one more of the vital Lego blocks it needs to make GREAT looking skin that ages well!
7. USING SOAPY FACE WASHES
Using soapy products on your skin dries your face up as quick as chocolate melts in the sun! Soap is drying because it has ingredients in there that grab onto water AND your protective oil sebum layer like a fish to a hook.
How do you tell if your face wash is soapy? Well likelihood is it will foam, that’s something soapy ingredients do, one of the most common soapy ingredients is called Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, that’s SLS for short, check if that’s on your ingredients list. These are the ‘Bad Boys’ of the cleanser world, attractive but no good in the long run.
8. NOT CHANGING SKINCARE WITH THE SEASONS.. OR ON HOLIDAY
Attachment theory works for skincare too! Sometimes it’s just hard to admit that your favourite potion needs to take a back seat for the season. As weather gets hotter, colder, more humid or dryer than the dessert, our skin ‘reads this like a book’ and changes.
If you’re going into a cold winter with lots of central heating around, then it’s time to POWER up the moisturiser. If you’re having a humid summer, it might be time to switch cream for serum! You know your skin’s language best.
9. TOUCHING YOUR FACE TOO MUCH
This is the addiction you didn’t know you had until you think about not doing it! Do you do it when you’re thinking? Do you rub a spot like bump subconsciously (it’s like playing with a scab!), or do you rest your head in your hands when you’re taking a minute from the computer screen?
Hands contain THE most germs on our body, and they share that to whatever grabs their attention. If that’s your face then it’s getting a dose of those too.
PRO-TIP: Wash your hands frequently, and fight the urge to touch your face!
10. PULLING AT THE EYES TO REMOVE MASCARA, EYELINER, EYE SHADOW…
Eventually eyes become a memory foam mattress, it happens everywhere, but the eye skin is the absolute THINNEST on the body, so it happens here first! When getting your clean down in the eye area, make sure that you use more gentle wipes, rather than less but more aggressive wipes.
11. NOT CLEANING YOUR PHONE OR TABLET
My phone gets flung in my bag, balanced on questionable surfaces, slung in my back pocket (sometimes at risk of being sat on!) and is generally the last thing I touch before going to bed. All that contact means whatever is on your phone is on your hands and therefore your skin.
Time to get those wet wipes working their magic on your ‘pawable’ every-days.
12. NOT CHECKING OUT WHAT’S IN YOUR FOUNDATION
If you have acne prone skin, it’s a good tip to try ‘n avoid Oleic high oils. That’s ones like Sunflower and Olive that are the base of HUNDREDS ‘n THOUSANDS of beauty products. If you have oily skin, it’s probably not a great idea to use moisturisers that form a ‘film’ on your skin, but if you have dry skin then that’s just what you need.
Thing is we are all pretty conscious of what is in our skincare. It won its place on our bathroom shelf because it’s perfectly made to CARE for our skin. When it comes to makeup, PRETTY is the number one mission, and skincare takes a back-seat.
Check what’s in your foundation and whether those creamy ingredients are full of goodness for loving your skin with.
13. YOU’RE NOT NOURISHING YOUR BODY WITH FOOD THAT MAKES GOOD SKIN
Making good skin is about having the ‘Lego’ blocks available, for your body to put them together in the way it knows how. That means it needs a balanced diet, one that has a lot of ‘colour’ in it to get your VITMAIN dose.
14. NOT WASHING YOUR FACE BEFORE BED
… or even checking that your significant other DOES! This could be 1 of the 6 reasons why your boyfriend is giving you spots!
Splashing your face before bed has to be the number 1 beauty law! There’s a lot on our skin we can’t see, and probably wouldn’t want to, we collect invisible bits during our days, dust, dirt, pollution, germs, bacteria. If that’s still on our skin when we are sleeping, it gets rubbed in even deeper and its neatly saved up on your pillow for the next night too!
15. NOT HAVING A REGULAR SCHEDULE OF CLEANING MAKEUP BRUSHES… AND BAGS!!
This is when having an army like approach to makeup hygiene is a winner. The only thing you want those brushes to put on your face is the makeup you intended. We don’t want no added extras – thanks, but no thanks.
PRO-TIP: Pop your makeup bags in the washing machine at least once a month!
16. EXERCISE IS PRIORITY NUMBER 1,000, 000, 000 000th
Exercise releases a load more of those Lego blocks our skin needs to glow. It gets a rush of endorphins and good hormones pumping through our bodies. That’s food for our skin too!
